what is soft lighting what is hard

lighting and which one should you use in

your videos now the easiest way to

explain this is if you were standing

outside and it was just direct sunlight

this is going to be very hard lighting

now if you’re standing outside it’s very

cloudy this is going to be soft lighting

you can really see the difference here

between the direct sunlight and the

sunlight coming through the clouds with

hard lighting there’s a sudden

transition from the bright spots to the

dark spots casting heavy dark shadows

whereas soft lighting softens that harsh

contrast between the dark spots and the

bright spots giving a more subtle shift

into the shadows now what i prefer and

what i use for youtube videos or

internet videos is soft lighting i think

it looks more beautiful and it actually

hides wrinkles and imperfections in the

skin whereas hard lighting makes those

more noticeable
